Call of Duty 7, according to dev

You may not realise it, but there’s a lot of juicy information about the as-yet-unnamed 7th title in the Call of Duty series sitting on their official forums. Specifically, Treyarch dev Vahn (real name David Vonderhaar – he’s the Multiplayer Design Director for the upcoming CoD game) has posted several tidbits in a thread on killstreak rewards for the forthcoming Call of Duty game – while some of this represents personal opinion, some of what he has to say may well represent the shape that their game is beginning to take.

The main message that he wants to stress is that Treyarch do listen to their community to the point that they read every single suggestion that is put to them. It seems we can expect to see a much more rounded game than Modern Warfare 2, as many posters on the Treyarch boards have called on the devs to learn from Infinity Ward’s mistakes and Vahn has expressed his agreement on more than one occasion.


One post for example recognises that there were problems with Modern Warfare 2, albeit in more diplomatic fashion:

I am seeing a lot of what I would call the “echo plex.” As fans of the previous games, we have drawn a lot of the same conclusions that many of you are drawing. Solutions to those problems may be different than any specific proposal in any specific post, but I’m glad we (generally speaking) want to go the same direction you want us to go.

In terms of actual game details, here’s a synopsis of what we can deduce from Vahn’s posts:

  • While they’ve tried having custom killstreaks for each class, that seemed to complicate the ‘purity and speed’ of Create a Class.
  • Consequently, it’s fair to assume that customizable killstreaks are all but confirmed.
  • At this stage in development, killstreaks stack and carry over if you die, but do not contribute to further killstreaks (hence eliminating the ‘camping for killstreaks’ problem of Modern Warfare 2).
  • Treyarch are not fans of Commando, the extended melee range perk in Modern Warfare 2, and it is unlikely to return.
  • They’ve tried a ‘manned’ version of the Sentry Gun killstreak, but weren’t fans.
  • We may well see a return to pistols as the only available sidearm, or perhaps a choice between pistols and launchers. Vahn and many of the team are not fans of shotguns and machine pistols as secondary weapons – it gives a player ‘too much firepower’.
  • The knife may well become a secondary weapon – although Vahn didn’t want to say too much.
  • Finally, don’t expect the nuke to return as a killstreak. Vahn says they are not fans of a game-ending killstreak.

    this is why i love you guys. you take an awesome concept and add/change it to what REAL players want. not just what the devs think ppl will like thus creating the vortex of problems associated w/ MW2 multiplayer. just one thing id like to add, please please please make sure that 2 ps3′s on a shared network can link up and play in the same room.. IW could careless about the ps3 network issues, i’ve reported multiple times and they insist its a user end problem. and i’m a network guy, this isn’t my end, its definately theirs, especially when i’m not the only person experiencing this issue. thanks again and i cant wait!

    It all sounds great. Now I just hope for no tanks, less killstreaks, the old weapon system (use overkill if you want an extra primary) and no noobtubes. Or at least less power for them. Give frag a comeback instead – little more power and maybe be able to carry two or three secondary grenades.

    Id love to see improved grahphics, more focus on game modes (objective modes and a stealth oriented hardcore FFA) and a clever map design… Like most of the WaW maps.

    I thought both IW and Treyarch would only make good Call of Duty games. IW proved me wrong and with activision wanting to appeal to casual gamers I just have to read a lot of reviews first.

  4. I disagree with the point no shotgun, i love them abd it makes the game fun. Even if your anoob you can stille make kills te raqnk with a shotgun. It my fav weapon in the game

  5. Shotguns were way overpowered as a secondary. Maybe they were fun for those who relied on cheap tactics to get kills but it wasnt fair when someone without a shotgun is in a small room with someone using an automatic 12 gauge shotgun.

    I’d rather have the knife be taken out all together but as long as it isnt as overpowered as it was in mw2 I dont really care.

    Noob tubes have to go completely. Way to easy to use.

    Bring back recoil and sway on weapons. In mw2 assault rifles were way to good because of this.

    Balance weapon classes. WaW was all about SMGs. MW2 was all about ARs.

    No vehicles. That ruined WaW. And no weapons like the mp40 where it has 50 base damage. That was rediculous. Balance every individual weapon and make them more unique. MW2 had like 10 ARs but they were basically all the same but looked different.

  6. hi its sounds great and i hope it is can there be tanks in the game which we can drive etc and planes (migs) we can get when we have a killstreek or care pakcage and you only lose the plane if its shot down so it doesnt go after a set time

    more realistic gun fire
    have binoculars in the agme aswel so you can cope for near by or far away targets

    dogs are better killstreak than pave low etc cuz someone cannot ruin the (earned) fun by shooting them down with single bazooka. in mw2 i found blast shield duels exciting and fun, something like it could be nice. commando perk omg leave it out and i hope theres no lightweight marathon runners with tactical knife eather.

    and here’s a little secret:
    in mw2 i found a nice and fair way to use thumper by using it as an artillery kind of weapon: i tried to shoot enemies from the other side of a map by aiming very high (with danger close) and it worked! (ultimate satisfaction) so if there is a thumper kind of weapon, make it so it cannot be shot straight forward and maybe slower to use?

    and thank u Treyarch for WaW, im still playing it and having a blast almost everytime!

  9. No overpowered killstreaks.make shotguns primarys again.please no commando.take grenade launchers out or lower damage of them.make the guns have recoil again.have a beta to make sure the game isnt broken like mw2 is.

    The game shouldn’t have as much map packs because I stopes playing COD WaW because I didn’t have the map packs and also try to bring back Zombies like a Zeitcong Zombies or something. I like all of Max Felix ideas but try to keep the secondary weapons like machine pistols, pistols, lanchers, and shotguns because everyone pretty much like that in MW2.

    I agree with a few of the points. BETA is a must, it’s great to have a build up of anticiaption for the game and ‘not want to ruin any surprises’. But if you want a game that works it has to be tested for countless hours. Something that can be accomplished much quicker through a BETA test.

    Secondly I don’t mind shotguns as secondaries. BUT you might as well just remove pistols all together. When you’re squaring off against someone with a shotgun you better have one yourself or your dead.

    Commando = simply retarded. Increased melee range is one thing, but when you’re shooting an enemy sqaure in the chest and they’re still able to lunge forward is a bit ridiculous. I thought it was called ‘stopping power’ not ‘extra damage’. When being shot from the front your shouldn’t be able to continue all out sprinting.

    I could go on, but I don’t want to write a novel. No matter how you look at it there’ll always be something to bitch about with any COD game.

  12. i recon the kill-steaks are limited there are choices i think there should be no nuke because it unfair is you a noobs who cant get it and always get nuked i think you should be able to get thing like emp that can stop chopper gunners. nuke is realy unfair.

  13. The spawning in MW2 was really bad
    1. people who know all the spawn points (especially in small maps like rust or scrapyard) end up killing everyone
    2.as soon as you kill someone they spawn right behind you
    3.killcam and tactical insertions, leave them out!

    You should make the maps bigger. And for those of you who complain about having to run all the way across the map just to get a kill, make squad based spawn points like in Battlefield.

  14. PLEASE put up something like on HALO where you can have a splitscreen online game. ive always wanted to do a splitscreen online multiplayer game after playing it on halo. it would be way better!

  15. also i think you should go ANYWHERE on EVERY map! but do not make corners for campers or big heavy messes for snipers. but do make it realistic on some places you can not go. like you cant go in the deeo water or you drown, or climb up cliffs, but you should be able to go in gardens, go into small forests, and some other places.
    what i found out fom World at War is that there are ALOT of awesmoe sniping places, but inpossible to get to by the barriers. the snipers wwill havea great place to snipe. but easy to get killed? or easy to be seen.
    Then for experianced players, there could be some spots that are difficult to get to, but is possible! so you should be able to jump into a bush, or jump from a cliff nito a tree? or on top of bui;dings!
    i love what they did for MODERN WARFARE 2 with the rateation kills you if you go to far out. on WORLD AT WAR in cliffside, you cant even jump on the ropes next to the cliff, on the next ghame you should be able to jump on EVERYTHING REASONABLE.

    I think that trearch are far mor sensible than infinity ward and know how a multiplayer game works, trearch can actually seperate out the good players from the bad, infinity ward tries to keep things balanced by rewarding shit players with the likes of painkiller, the killstreaks are way 2 unfair i mean a chopper gunner gets you like 25 kills ac130 gets you about 20, emergency air drops are pathetic i got 2 ac130s out of 1 and 2 preds, and a game ending killstreak in my eyes is just a lazy 1 that they threw in to make shit people aim 4 sumthing but good players get all the time. AND NO JUGGERNAUT BUT THERE IS STOPPING POWER where is the sense in that, no protection against snipers n shit. everything is too overpowerd noob tubes 4 1 and rocket launchers are a disgrace, there is far 2 much power to the player in mw2 i mean akimbo p90s and ump45s are just 2, infact akimbo itself is just 2 far, the only good thing that infinity ward has done is the callsigns. plus the fact that there can be an ac130 a chopper gunner and a harrier in at the same time just takes the piss! HEARTBEAT SENSORS WTF!!!! i mean why would you do that, thermal is just unfair. AND DONT FORGET the f***ed up leaderboards, trearch had the right idea about multiple leaderboards and grants the ability to look at the other teams stats is a good way to avoid sweaty players.

    And now trearch if you do listen to your fans you will listen 2 me save cod and bring it back to they way it was A RUN N GUN, not a camp n hide, plzzzz save it

    I found the spawning really bad in Mw2 and i hope they do something about that. also they shouldnt concentrate on makin 1 gun look good and doin a bad job with the others, like the Mp40 in Waw and the Ump45 and Acr in Mw2, those guns are overused in games and there is no longer any variety in peoples classes. I hope they do something about this in Cod 7.

    honestly, every game has something about it worng. but onething that i found i HATED about EVERY single cod game….grenade laucher, i HATE that thing, u dont even have to aim just look up shoot and ur most likey gonna hit somone. have something like the thumper…that was ok becuase u had to give up ur secondary weapons for it….like u can danger close wit a greande laucher attachment and fire those off than switch for ur thumper and fire a few off of that….dumb…everything else about mw2 i actrually didnt mind….o and in the next game….make it harder for someone to camp….thats not anyfun

  21. I’d like it if they removed the attachable grenade launchers (noob tubes), but kept the launcher-type grenade launchers, like the Thumper in Modern Warfare 2. The Thumper grenades fly slower, and also, if you use it like me (always fire hip fire) it takes a while to aim in fully before shooting.

    If they would want to keep “noob tubes” in the game, i think that would be a good way of balancing it more… Making them like Halo weapons almost. No aiming down the sights, i mean.

  22. noob tubes should be gone, and you should be able to go everywhere in the map. in veitnam they used helicopters so you could choose a spot to spawn in lzs that are close to the fight but not near enemies. make explosives get rid of about half of your health so you need to get in close and and shoot them. you can also make it so the only way to kill someone with a knife is to get there throut or else they just get wounded. make the maps huge with bigger battles, when there are large firefights in games like battlefeild 1943 or Operation flashpoint it just gets much funner.

    Only handguns and launchers as side arms because shotguns are just unfair

    Knife should stay stay a 1 hit kill because you can get in that close but no comando perk or light weight and those speed perks

    Also there should be no danger close because noobs just shoot of noob tubes randomly throw grenades and launchers

    At least World at War was more balanced than Mw2. If you run around with marathon, light weight and commando, you’re the biggest noob in Cod. First thing that should NEVER return in Commando. You’re shooting a guy ten feet away and he wants to KNIFE you with COMMANDO, so he extends ten feet and give you the business. Last I checked this was Call of Duty, not Ninja Gaiden. The knifing in Mw2 is just STUPID.

    THe Shotguns. . .wow. The only fair shotgun, and that’s saying something, is probably the Spas-12. Rangers Akimbo is noob central. Models have crazy range. Stryker gets too annoying because people spam it. M10 can spray. Spas-12 is pump action, if you miss you’re screwed, so it’s legit. So reduce the stupid-ness of the Shotguns, at least make them shitty enough to where skilled people can use them only.

    The death streaks are retarded. Hey you’ve died three times, lets increase your health. Good job! Take out death streaks. Take out the Nuke, like, omg. You have to camp for that, for that Harrier and it does the rest for you.

    GRENADE LAUNCHERS SHOULD BE BANNED. Danger Close only made noobs jump for joy. Assault Rifles, no recoil? UMP SPAM IS EVERYWHERE. Who DOESN’T USE UMP45 SILENCED!? Fk that gun I use the Mini-Uzi or the MP5K. There is no balance in Mw2. Return in PLEASE in Black Ops.

    - no spraying firepower retarded stuff like akimbo machine pistols smgs etc

    - commando will defo be out

    - no tubes or at least make them less powerful

    - silenced bolt action sniper rifle 1shot kill when hit chest up

    - spraying snipers lower the damage

    - and add some recoil/kick to those guns its ridiculous how easy is to shoot down people full auto at range

  33. Please, please, please, PLEASE keep map pack prices DOWN.

    I’d pay €14 euro for 7+ maps and a new game mode or two. Not for 3 new maps and 2 recycled ones, and I’m sure many agree.

    Look at WaW: On PlayStation Store right now, I can get all the DLC (zombie maps, MP maps, trophies, etc) for €25.

    Now look at MW2: For €28, I can get 6 new maps and 4 recycled from MW1, without even a noticeable graphics update on the old ones. Thats pathetic.

    So *please* keep map pack prices resonable.

  34. I have on simple request from TreyArch. Please, please, please don’t give every stupid gun tracer rounds…. Only machine guns should have tracers. Period. No MP5K or USP is going to have a visible bullet trace. There is nothing more frustrating than someone seeing my bullet tracers from around a corner. Also, frag grenades to not leave a tracer line in real life as well. Please do away with these frustrating tracer lines… even if only in hardcore mode.

    - Keep the darn grenade launchers why do you cry in WaW you need 150 Sniper Kills for it and 100 M1 garand and 150 Gewer kills unlike MW2 10 kills you get noob tube which was like wtf.

    - Balanced weapons like MP40 should have had the MOST recoil since its so powerful

    - No death streaks and juggernaut should come back to count stopping power

    - BLING SHOULD COME like I could use a M1 Garand with Bayonet and Flash Hider

    - Semi Auto Snipers only unlockable at high level like the PTRS-41 not like the barreta 50 cal

Eliminating the fact that kill streaks do not add to other killstreaks will just increase camping further for those people that want the higher killstreaks, for example, rather than them getting a harrier and that getting 4 kills for their 11 killstreak they’ll still be sitting there waiting for those 4 kills.
